Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, is Hawaii top visitor attraction.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park sprawls over 377 square miles 30 miles south of Hilo. It's a magnificent wonderland of massive calderas, vast expanses of lava, pit craters, rain forests, steam vents, sulphur banks, lava tubes and kipuka, oases of greenery and wildlife that have been miraculously left untouched by molten rivers of lava.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is open 24 hours a day, year round. You should start your journey at the visitor center.

Things to Do and See

  • Hike Volcano. Visitors can explore 150 miles of trails, ranging from an easy 20-minutes stroll on a paved path that measures less than half a miles to strenuous four-day treks that cover more than 36 miles. Scenic highlights include fern- and moss-draped Thurston Lava Tube; Devastation Trail, a half-mile walk through a forest of skeletal ohia trees; and Halemaumau Crater, which measures a half-mile wide and 1,000 feet deep.
  • Volcano House. Perched on the rim of Kilauea, one of the world's most active volcanoes, Volcano Hous is Hawaii's oldest continually operated hotel. There actually been three Volcanos Houses, which have hosted many distinguished guests including Mark Twain; and presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon.
  • Volcano Winery. Three miles from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Volcano Winery is the Big Island's only winery. The winery produces six wines with a tropical flair. It is open 365 days a year and offers free tastings of all of its wines.

Don't miss the night viewing of red hot molten lava flow. Be sure to bring flash light, camera & drinking water; dress in long pant and sneaker to walk on lava rock.
